Hitchens: Danish Buycott Worked

In a postscript added today to this excellent piece by Christopher Hitchens on Zarkawi's death/Saddam's links to terror, and so forth, Hitchens reports that the "Buy Danish" campaign, made in response to Muslim boycotts caused by The Cartoons of Doom, had its intended effect:

Postscript: A note of cheer to all those Slate readers who either attended the Solidarity With Denmark rally, or sent encouragement, or rallied round to buy Danish goods. I have today received a note from one of the Copenhagen editors who published the original cartoons, informing me that in the last quarter, Danish exports to the United States have increased by 17 percent and that, overall, the Danish economy has more than compensated for the results of the unjustified Muslim boycott. Let us keep this example in mind.

I'll raise a glass to that (as I sit here wearing one of my two new pairs of unbelievably comfortable Ecco shoes).

Dear Bloggers,

With every molecule my body possesses, I would like to thank all who supported the Danes and freedom of speech - especially those who were able to rally the Danish Embassy with Mr. Hitchens, as well as those who chose to 'Buycott' Denmark.

Kim, the name of the beer you have bought is "Carlsberg", and it is indeed a Danish beer along with "Tuborg".

Personally, I prefer Tuborg, but both are very fine beers. To Danes, they are the equivilant of what Budweiser and Miller are to Americans.

(If your interested, check out www.carlsberg.com and www.tuborg.com - the Danish word for "CHEERS!" is "SKOAL!"..!)

Now if ya'll will excuse me, THIS American Viking has to go down and stock up on (quite a large number of) American products - including a very close, personal and dear friend of mine: Mr. Jack Daniels.

Never Forget!
